GenAI ASEAN Monthly Newsletter – March 2026
The GenAI ASEAN Monthly Newsletter is an initiative by GenAI Fund to keep you informed about the latest trends, breakthroughs, and developments in Generative AI across Southeast Asia. Each month, we curate key highlights — including 💰 investments, 📰 policy shifts, 🚀 startup innovations, and 🤝 impactful collaborations shaping the GenAI ecosystem in ASEAN.
March 2026 was a month of momentum and milestones. We kicked off the GenAI Fund Expert Series with a record-breaking Qwen webinar that attracted 130+ attendees from 16 countries. We also co-organized and supported LotusHacks 2026, Vietnam’s largest ever AI hackathon, which brought together over 1,500 builders from 30 countries. As we head into April, the pace accelerates — our busiest month yet, with a series of major initiatives in collaboration with Qwen and Alibaba Cloud.
Together, these milestones highlight how GenAI Fund and its partners are strengthening the bridge between startups and enterprises — driving AI from pilot to production across Asia.
Key Highlights for March 2026
1️⃣ GenAI Fund Expert Series ft. Qwen: Record-Breaking Launch
📜 Summary of what happened:
On March 11, GenAI Fund launched the GenAI Fund Expert Series with our inaugural session featuring Qwen by Alibaba Cloud. The response exceeded all expectations: 130+ attendees joined live — 4.5x higher than our initial target — from 16 countries, with Malaysia, Singapore, and Vietnam leading the pack. Attendees were 63% from startups, 12% from enterprises, and 73% were technical practitioners.
The session covered the rapid evolution of the China AI landscape, featuring Qwen 3.5 Plus with its 1 million token context window, 201 languages supported, and native tool calling for agentic workflows. Attendees also learned about Alibaba Cloud’s video generation model (Wan) and image generation capabilities (Qwen Image 2.0), with real-world use cases from healthcare to AI-native startups.
🔎 Why this matters to the GenAI ecosystem in ASEAN:
The overwhelming response signals the region’s hunger for direct access to cutting-edge global AI models and expertise. Chinese open-source models like Qwen are now competitive with Western alternatives while being 5x to 17x cheaper — a game-changer for startups managing burn rates. This session democratized access to world-class technology and knowledge, enabling builders across ASEAN to stay at the forefront of AI innovation.

2️⃣ LotusHacks 2026: Vietnam’s Largest Ever AI Hackathon
On March 20-22, GenAI Fund co-organized and supported LotusHacks 2026, the largest AI hackathon ever held in Vietnam. The event brought together over 1,500 confirmed attendees from 30 countries, forming more than 200 competing teams. With 30+ sponsors and ecosystem partners, the hackathon offered up to $1M in total ecosystem prizes.
For 36 hours straight, VNG Campus in Ho Chi Minh City became the epicenter of AI innovation in Southeast Asia. Builders had access to nearly 150 real business problems from large enterprises on the GenAI Fund platform. Workshops from OpenAI and AWS provided hands-on learning, while a lunch panel featuring leaders from Tasco and Coca-Cola Beverages Vietnam connected builders with enterprise perspectives. The top three winners — FocusIQ (personalized learning with brain signals), TinyDetective (counterfeit product detection), and Coco (AI-powered interactive learning for kids) — were selected from finalists who pitched their prototypes on the main stage.
🔎 Why this matters to the GenAI ecosystem in ASEAN:
This hackathon was a watershed moment for the region. It proved that when you give builders the right tools, environment, and enterprise problems to solve, they deliver world-class solutions in record time. This event created a talent pool and signaled to the global AI community that the next wave of innovation in Southeast Asia is already here.
